Brampton Trio Charged in $500K Fraud Scheme, $70K Seized
Brampton trio charged in $500K cheque fraud scheme

Three individuals from Brampton are facing serious charges following a major police investigation into an alleged half-million-dollar fraud operation that spanned across Canada.

Project Carbon Copy Uncovers Cross-Country Scam

Toronto Police's Financial Crimes Unit initiated the probe, dubbed Project Carbon Copy, in February 2025. According to authorities, the investigation focused on a group accused of conducting organized fraud offences nationwide.

Police allege the scheme involved members travelling to different parts of the country to deposit fraudulent cheques into bank accounts. Subsequently, other associates would quickly access the funds through ATM withdrawals and point-of-sale purchases, with some transactions occurring at casinos. The total estimated loss from these activities is approximately $500,000.

Search Warrants Yield Significant Seizures

On December 16, 2025, investigators executed search warrants at a Brampton residence and on two vehicles. The operation led to the seizure of a substantial haul of evidence and assets.

The items confiscated by police include:

  • $70,000 in cash
  • Precious metals, including gold
  • Fraudulent cheques and bank documents
  • High-end clothing and cellphones
  • Two vehicles

Suspects Identified and Charged

Following the searches, three people were taken into custody. The accused are all Brampton residents: Jashanbir Jabbal, 23; Gurbir Jabbal, 25; and Aryan Gupta, 23.

Each faces two counts of fraud over $5,000. All three are scheduled to make a court appearance on January 28.

The case highlights the ongoing challenge of fraud in Canada. A recent Angus Reid survey found that four-in-five Canadians report being targeted by fraud attempts online or by phone. Furthermore, reported fraud losses in the country surpassed $638 million in 2024.
