Brampton Man Faces Charges for Alleged Theft of Hurricane Relief Supplies
A 40-year-old Brampton man has been charged with multiple offences, including probation violations, after being accused of stealing hurricane relief supplies that were intended for Jamaica. The supplies, valued at over $1 million, were awaiting shipment to assist the Caribbean island in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which struck in the fall of 2025.
Police Investigation Details
Peel Regional Police launched an investigation after a break-in occurred at a secured storage facility near Derry Road East and Goreway Drive in Mississauga on December 3, 2025, shortly after 5 a.m. According to authorities, the suspect hitched a trailer containing a shipping container to a transport truck and drove away with the stolen goods.
The container housed thousands of dollars worth of relief items, including clothing and non-perishable goods, which were destined for Jamaica to aid recovery efforts following the devastating hurricane.
Suspect Identification and Arrest
Investigators identified the suspect as Varinder Dhillon, who police say was already on probation for similar offences and had been prohibited from driving indefinitely. On March 11, 2026, officers executed a search warrant at a home in Brampton and arrested Dhillon.
He has been charged with:
- One count of break and enter and commit an indictable offence
- Two counts each of theft over $5,000 and operation while prohibited
- Three counts each of possession of property obtained by crime, breach of probation, and failing to comply with a release order
Recovery and Return of Stolen Property
Police reported that more than $1 million worth of allegedly stolen property was recovered and returned to its rightful owner. The supplies were subsequently shipped to Kingston, Jamaica, where they were to be distributed to those affected by Hurricane Melissa.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about this incident to contact investigators with the Commercial Auto Crime Bureau at 905-453-2121, extension 8813, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
This case highlights the ongoing challenges in disaster relief efforts and the importance of securing aid supplies to ensure they reach those in need. The timely recovery and return of the stolen items have been praised by officials, emphasizing the dedication of law enforcement in addressing such crimes.
