The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation into an incident where a man sustained injuries during an arrest at a Downtown Edmonton hotel last month. The police watchdog was called in to examine the circumstances surrounding the arrest, which occurred in the early morning hours of March 21.
Incident Details and Police Response
According to ASIRT, hotel employees contacted emergency services at approximately 3 a.m. to report a man who appeared to be intoxicated and was refusing to leave the hotel lobby despite being offered assistance. The hotel is located near 100 Avenue and 104 Street in Edmonton's downtown core.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the man inside the hotel and attempted to resolve the situation peacefully. However, when the individual refused multiple orders to vacate the premises, officers proceeded to arrest him for trespassing.
Escalation During Arrest Procedure
During the arrest process, the man reportedly resisted being placed in handcuffs and continued to struggle after officers brought him to the ground. In response to this resistance, one officer deployed a conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a Taser, to gain control of the situation.
ASIRT stated in their official news release that following the deployment of the energy weapon, officers were able to successfully restrain the individual. The man was then handcuffed and escorted outside the hotel building.
Medical Attention and Ongoing Investigation
After the arrest was completed, the man complained of arm pain, prompting officers to call paramedics to the scene. He was subsequently transported to Royal Alexandra Hospital for medical evaluation by physicians. ASIRT has confirmed that the extent of the man's injuries remains undetermined at this stage of the investigation.
The Police Review Commission has classified this incident as a Level 1 matter, directing ASIRT to conduct a thorough investigation. Under Alberta's Police Act, Level 1 investigations encompass cases involving serious injuries or fatalities, as well as situations raising significant concerns about police officer conduct.
Watchdog's Mandate and Current Status
ASIRT serves as Alberta's independent police oversight body, automatically investigating any serious incidents involving police officers throughout the province. The agency has emphasized that their investigation into this hotel arrest remains active and ongoing, with no additional information available to the public at this time.
This incident highlights the complex challenges law enforcement faces when dealing with individuals in crisis situations, particularly in public spaces like hotel lobbies. The investigation will examine whether proper protocols were followed during the arrest and whether the use of force was justified under the circumstances.
