Alberta Semi Driver Receives House Arrest Sentence for Dramatic Highway Collision
A shocking highway incident that saw a semi-truck run over a tow truck and a Mercedes has resulted in an Alberta driver being sentenced to house arrest. The terrifying crash occurred on Highway 1 west of Field, British Columbia, on December 8, 2023, but remarkably resulted in no fatalities.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
The collision unfolded when a Mercedes had been stopped for excessive speeding and was in the process of being impounded. A British Columbia Highway patrol officer, the tow truck driver, and the Mercedes driver were all present at the scene when the semi-truck approached.
According to video evidence, the semi-truck drove up the tow truck's flatbed trailer like a ramp before crashing over both the tow truck and the Mercedes positioned in front of it. The impact completely destroyed all vehicles involved and caused the semi-truck to flip over, trapping the driver inside the cab.
"Everyone is lucky to be alive," stated a press release from the B.C. RCMP following the incident. Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol emphasized the narrow escape, noting that "the tow truck operator, the police officer, and the Mercedes driver were safely off to the side of the road, or they would certainly have been killed."
Legal Consequences for the Driver
The 38-year-old Alberta driver, Dalvir Singh Jhattu, was found guilty of dangerous driving on April 8 and received significant penalties:
- A six-month conditional sentence order
- 90 days of house arrest
- A 12-month Canada-wide driving ban
- Prohibition from possessing or consuming alcohol, drugs, or intoxicating substances
Important Safety Reminders
The RCMP used this incident to remind drivers of their legal obligations when encountering emergency vehicles on highways. By law, when drivers see flashing lights from tow trucks or emergency vehicles, they must:
- Slow down to 70 kilometers per hour
- Move to the lane furthest from the emergency vehicle
Corporal McLaughlin stressed that "normal speed limits exist for ideal conditions" and emphasized that drivers are legally required to slow down even more when road workers or emergency responders are present at the roadside.
The dramatic crash serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of dangerous driving and the importance of adhering to safety regulations designed to protect both motorists and emergency personnel working on Canada's highways.
