Alberta RCMP seize drugs, guns in Ponoka bust

Alberta RCMP have concluded a significant four-month drug trafficking investigation with a major bust in Ponoka, resulting in multiple charges against two individuals and the seizure of dangerous drugs, firearms, and cash.

Search Warrant Executed on Ponoka Residence

On January 7, 2026, members of the Ponoka RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) and the Wetaskiwin RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) executed a search warrant at a home located in the 5100 block of 60 Avenue in Ponoka. The operation was the culmination of an investigation that began in September 2025.

In a fortuitous turn of events, a stolen vehicle arrived at the property just as police were preparing to conduct the search. Officers swiftly intercepted the vehicle and arrested its four occupants.

Significant Haul of Drugs and Weapons

A search of the vehicle and its driver yielded an immediate cache of illicit items. Police seized 22 grams of methamphetamine, 6 grams of cocaine, a 12-gauge shotgun, a rifle, ammunition, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The search of the residence itself proved even more fruitful. Inside, officers discovered and confiscated 89 grams of fentanyl and 95 grams of methamphetamine, along with additional cash. The combined seizures represent a substantial blow to local drug trafficking operations.

Two Individuals Face Multiple Charges

Following the operation, two individuals were formally charged with a total of 19 offences.

Erica Foley, 44, of Ponoka, faces charges including five counts of trafficking a controlled substance, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Richard Stanley Soosay, 33, of Maskwacis, is confronting 11 weapons and drug-related charges. These include three counts of weapons possession contrary to order, failing to surrender an authorization, and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Both were remanded. Soosay remains in custody, while Foley was released with conditions. Both have future court dates in Ponoka. The two other individuals arrested from the vehicle were released and given notices for future court appearances.

RCMP Highlight Collaborative Success

RCMP officials praised the coordinated effort between detachments. Corporal John Learn of the Wetaskiwin Crime Reduction Unit stated, "This successful operation coordinated between Ponoka and Wetaskiwin RCMP Units demonstrates the effective interoperability of our detachments."

He emphasized the positive community impact, adding, "The removal of these crime guns and drugs can have an immediate positive impact on our communities." The lengthy investigation underscores the RCMP's commitment to systematically gathering evidence to dismantle networks involved in trafficking dangerous narcotics and illegal weapons.
