Squamish Nation Holds Blessing Ceremony for Seńáḵw Tower
On May 8, 2026, the Squamish Nation conducted a traditional blessing ceremony to commemorate the completion of the first tower of the Seńáḵw residential development in Vancouver. The event took place on ancestral Squamish Nation lands adjacent to the Burrard Bridge, a site with deep historical significance.
The ceremony included a cedar bough brushing performed by Billy Joseph (Xayinem), an 8-year-old boy who held a bucket of water, symbolizing a new beginning. Additional rituals such as blanket ceremonies and blessings were led by Squamish Nation council members Swowo Gabriel and Victor Harry, who served as masters of ceremonies.
Development Details
The Seńáḵw development currently features three towers nearing completion, with plans for an additional eight towers in the future. The project is situated on a reserve from which the Squamish people were displaced over a century ago. Following a Supreme Court of Canada case, a portion of the land was returned to the Nation in 2000.
The blessing ceremony underscores the community's connection to the land and marks a step forward in the redevelopment of their ancestral territory. The event was captured by photographer Jason Payne, with images showing various aspects of the ceremony.
