Police in Coquitlam, British Columbia, are turning to the public for help in a unique and sensitive case: reuniting a found funeral urn with its rightful owners. The Coquitlam RCMP released images of the urn on Wednesday, describing it as a 'last hope' effort to identify the family to whom the remains belong.
Urn Discovered Under Unknown Circumstances
The urn was discovered earlier this month, though police have not disclosed the exact location or circumstances of its finding. The vessel, which appears to be a standard cremation urn, is made of a dark, polished material with a metallic plate on the front. The plate is engraved with what appears to be a name or inscription, but investigators have been unable to decipher it clearly.
Constable Alex Hodges of the Coquitlam RCMP stated, 'We have exhausted our conventional methods to locate the family. This urn contains the remains of a loved one, and it is our duty to ensure it is returned to the proper family for closure and dignity.'
Public Assistance Crucial
The RCMP is asking anyone who recognizes the urn or has information about its origin to come forward. They have released two photographs of the urn in hopes that someone will recognize it. 'Even the smallest detail could be the key to solving this,' Hodges added.
The urn is described as approximately 20 centimeters tall, with a brushed metal finish and a removable lid. It does not bear any obvious identifying marks besides the engraved plate, which may include a date or initials.
Community Response
The appeal has garnered attention on social media, with many residents expressing sympathy and sharing the post. Local funeral homes have also been contacted to check records, but no matches have been found so far.
This case highlights the challenges police face when items of personal significance are lost or abandoned without clear identification. 'We are treating this with the utmost respect and urgency,' Hodges emphasized.
