Mexican Man Faces Charges for Alleged Smuggling of Family on Raft Across Niagara River
In a dangerous and reckless incident, U.S. border agents have arrested a Mexican man accused of smuggling a family across the frigid Niagara River using a small rubber raft. The event, which occurred earlier this month in Buffalo, New York, involved an infant on board, prompting officials to label it as particularly hazardous.
Details of the Arrest and Charges
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agents stationed in Buffalo investigated reports of an illegal entry from the Ontario side of the border on March 15. During their investigation, agents spotted a small rubber raft and one individual. Additionally, they discovered a man from Ireland, a woman from the United Kingdom, and their infant child hiding behind a nearby tree.
All four individuals, including the operator of the raft—a Mexican man with no prior criminal record—had crossed the Upper Niagara River from Canada and were promptly taken into custody by border officials.
Charges Filed Against the Accused
The Mexican man faces serious charges, including:
- Human smuggling
- Unlawful entry into the United States
- Child endangerment
The man from Ireland was charged with illegally re-entering the U.S. after being deported in June 2025. He is also wanted in Rhode Island on felony assault charges and will be extradited there following the prosecution of his federal immigration charges.
The woman and her infant were processed and removed back to Canada, according to officials.
Official Statements on the Incident
Acting Chief Patrol Agent James D’Amato of the U.S. Border Patrol Buffalo Sector emphasized the extreme risks involved in such crossings. In a statement, he said, “Crossing the border illegally is dangerous under any circumstances, but taking an infant across the freezing Niagara River in a small raft is especially reckless.”
He further noted that this kind of risk endangers not only the adults involved but also the life of a very young child and the Border Patrol agents who put their lives at risk every day securing the nation’s borders.
Broader Implications and Safety Concerns
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges and dangers associated with illegal border crossings, particularly in harsh environmental conditions like the cold waters of the Niagara River. It highlights the critical role of border security in preventing such hazardous attempts and protecting vulnerable individuals, including children.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the severe legal consequences and life-threatening risks that come with attempting to enter the United States unlawfully.
