U.S. Tariff Refunds to Start May 12, CBP Says, a Day Later Than Expected
U.S. Tariff Refunds to Start May 12, a Day Later

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency announced on Monday that the first electronic refunds from tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump, which were ruled illegal by the Supreme Court, are now expected to begin as soon as May 12. This is a one-day delay from the previous estimate of May 11, according to a message sent to shippers.

Status Reports Now Available

The updated start date for Automated Clearing House (ACH) payments was included in a notice about the availability of status reports. These reports allow claimants to monitor the processing status of their refund requests. No explanation was provided for the change in date.

Scope of Refunds

Up to $166 billion in CBP collections from tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act are subject to refunds. The Supreme Court had ruled that Trump overstepped his authority by using the 1977 sanctions law to impose these tariffs.
