The U.S. military carried out fresh strikes overnight in Iran, targeting a military site that officials believed posed a threat to U.S. forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.
Details of the Strikes
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the U.S. military also intercepted and shot down multiple Iranian drones that were deemed a similar threat. These strikes, previously unreported, occurred amid ongoing negotiations to end a three-month conflict that began on February 28 with U.S. and Israeli attacks. The war has resulted in thousands of casualties and driven global energy prices sharply higher.
Trump's Response
Earlier on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed an Iranian state media report claiming that Iran and Oman would jointly manage shipping through the Strait of Hormuz as part of a peace deal. Trump insisted the waterway would remain open.
Previous Defensive Actions
The U.S. last conducted what it termed defensive strikes against Iran on Monday, which Iran labeled a violation of the fragile ceasefire. Those strikes targeted boats attempting to lay mines and missile launch sites that the U.S. military's Central Command said endangered U.S. forces.
