Conrad Black argues that the anti-Trump narrative of surrender in Iran is false, as the U.S. has achieved significant strategic gains.
Iran's Claims of Moral Victory Dismissed
Iranian claims of moral victory are not to be believed, according to Conrad Black. The author contends that President Donald Trump is on his way to a strategic victory in Iran, despite what haters say.
When Hamas invaded Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 and kidnapping 250, Iran was nearing nuclear weapons capability. Iran hoped for a general revolt in the West Bank and had Hezbollah with 150,000 rockets ready. Hamas had 20,000-30,000 trained terrorists in Gaza.
Israeli and Allied Successes
Through heroic efforts by the Israeli Defence Forces, Hamas has lost over half of Gaza and many trained personnel. Hezbollah's missile stock is depleted. Both groups suffered leadership decapitation. Iran lost its nuclear program, navy, air defenses, and leadership. The Oct. 7 invasion has been a disaster for Iran and its allies.
Israeli losses were significant but modest compared to those inflicted. The U.S. lost 13 servicemen, far fewer than in past conflicts.
Peace Agreement and Enforcement
Iran will likely cheat, as it always does, but the U.S. retains heavy forces to enforce the agreement. President Trump promised to go back to war over violations. The nuclear agreement aims to deny Iran nuclear weapons and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Positive realignments among Gulf states and a more cautious Tehran are expected.
If Iran violates the deal, a second phase will come at a more convenient time for the Trump administration, avoiding midterm election pressures.
Ongoing Concerns
There is no specific promise to stop bankrolling terrorism, but sanctions relief will be performance-based. America retains deterrence against Iranian backsliding.
After the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein claimed victory despite defeat. Similarly, Iran will claim moral victory. But the reality is a strategic win for Trump.
