Trump Expresses Disgust Over His Supreme Court Appointees' Tariff Vote
Former President Donald Trump made headlines on Wednesday by publicly criticizing two Supreme Court justices he personally nominated, stating they "sicken" him due to their votes in a significant tariff case. The remarks were delivered during a Republican fundraising dinner in Washington, D.C., where Trump voiced his frustration over a recent court ruling that limited his authority to impose emergency tariffs.
Court Decision Sparks Outrage
The controversy stems from a February Supreme Court decision that struck down most of the emergency tariffs Trump had assessed during his presidency. In a 6-3 ruling, the court restricted his tariff-levying powers, with conservative Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch joining the majority. Trump claimed this decision cost the United States hundreds of billions of dollars, a point he emphasized repeatedly at the event.
"Two of the people that voted for that I appointed, and they sicken me," Trump declared. "They sicken me cause they're bad for our country." Although he did not mention Barrett and Gorsuch by name in the moment, his comments clearly targeted them, highlighting his disappointment in their judicial independence.
Broader Criticism of Republican Judges
This incident is not an isolated one. In the aftermath of the ruling last month, Trump expressed shame over certain court members and labeled those who opposed the tariffs as "fools and lapdogs." Earlier this month, he also launched a general attack on Republican judges, contrasting them with Democratic justices whom he accused of always sticking together.
"The Democrats on the Court always 'stick together,' no matter how strong a case is put before them — There is rarely even a minor 'waver,'" Trump wrote. "But Republicans do not do this. They openly disrespect the Presidents who nominate them to the highest position in the Land, a Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and go out of their way, with bad and wrongful rulings and intentions, to prove how 'honest,' 'independent,' and 'legitimate' they are."
Trump's View on Judicial Appointments
Wednesday's remarks further illuminated Trump's perspective that his appointees in government and the judiciary should primarily serve his interests. This worldview suggests he expects loyalty over independent judgment, a stance that has drawn criticism from legal experts and other officials.
In response to such attacks, Chief Justice John Roberts made general remarks last week about the dangers of hostility toward the judiciary. "Judges around the country work very hard to get it right, and if they don't, their opinions are subject to criticism," Roberts said. "But, personally directed hostility is dangerous, and it's got to stop."
Context and Reactions
It is worth noting that Trump did praise other conservative justices who sided with him in the tariff matter, including Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Brett Kavanaugh, another of his appointees. This selective criticism underscores the political tensions within the court and Trump's ongoing influence in Republican circles.
The event also recalled a moment from February when Justice Amy Coney Barrett was seen applauding before Trump's State of the Union speech, a gesture that contrasts with the current discord. As the 2026 political landscape evolves, Trump's comments continue to spark debate about judicial independence and the role of presidential appointees in upholding the law versus personal allegiances.
