President Donald Trump on Sunday leveraged a shooting incident at a gala he attended in Washington to promote his plans for constructing a massive ballroom adjacent to the White House, a project that has encountered legal obstacles.
Shooting at White House Correspondents' Dinner
Shots were fired on Saturday evening as Secret Service agents subdued a gunman attempting to storm the White House Correspondents' Dinner, an event attended by Trump, senior government officials, and hundreds of journalists. The annual private function, traditionally held at the Washington Hilton a few blocks from the White House, has been a staple for decades.
Trump's Response on Truth Social
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: "What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE."
The $400-million ballroom has become a signature initiative for Trump during his second term, frequently mentioned in public appearances, press conferences, and meetings.
Security Features Highlighted
In his Sunday post, Trump praised the security features of the proposed ballroom, which has faced widespread public criticism for its excessive scale and lack of consultation. "This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction at the White House," he asserted. "It cannot be built fast enough! While beautiful, it has every highest level security feature there is."
Trump also referenced the ballroom during a hastily convened press conference on Saturday evening following the shooting, and many of his political allies and online supporters voiced backing for the project.
Legal Challenges and Controversy
The future of the project, which has already involved the abrupt demolition of the historic East Wing of the White House, is being contested in the courts. The Washington Hilton location was also the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan.
