President Donald Trump made one thing clear on Wednesday: he does not care about the upcoming midterm elections, despite warning signs for the Republican Party.
Trump's Remarks on Iran and Midterms
While speaking with reporters, Trump suggested that Iranian leaders were trying to put pressure on America by prolonging negotiations, hoping that Republicans would suffer politically from the negative economic impact of the ongoing war. However, even though both Trump and his handling of the Iran conflict remain unpopular with many American voters, the president insisted that the risk of his party facing a defeat in the midterms is not a significant concern for him.
"They thought they're going to outwait me. He's got the midterms," Trump said. "I don't care about the midterms."
He then added, "Look at what happened last night. That was a prelude to the midterms," referencing the victory of Trump-endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over veteran Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.
Mixed Signals for Republicans
Although Paxton's win demonstrated that Trump's endorsement still holds weight with his base, other factors suggest potential trouble for the GOP in November. On Tuesday, Republican efforts to gain seats in Alabama and South Carolina by eliminating congressional districts held by Black Democrats both failed.
Additionally, CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten noted on Sunday that Trump is now underwater with young men by 55 percent, a demographic that helped him secure victory in 2024.
Social Media Reactions
Many people on social media shared their thoughts on Trump's declaration that he does not care about the midterms. One user pointed out the difference between primary and general election voting patterns, saying, "Comparing the Republican primaries to the midterms is dumb." Others highlighted the apparent indifference, with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand simply stating, "Yes, we noticed." Political commentator Jon Favreau echoed that sentiment, while journalist Annie Karni remarked, "We really need a new formulation of 'saying the quiet part out loud.'"
Some users connected Trump's statement to other issues, with one noting, "Doesn't care about Midterms. Doesn't care about the price of gas. Cares about the Ballroom." Another user commented, "A comforting remark from Trump for all Republicans seeking re-election in the midterms ... DJT has repeatedly demonstrated that he doesn't give a sh*t about the overwhelming majority of individuals."
Others speculated about potential electoral interference, with one person saying, "Oh. They're just going to cheat again," and another writing, "Trump: Elon will rig them, we'll keep doing crimes, world keeps on spinning. Have we talked about the ballroom yet?"
One user paraphrased a John Lennon song lyric: "I just believe in me, Yoko and me, that's reality."
Pattern of Indifference
This is not the first time Trump has used the "I don't care" approach. In March, he stated that it did not really matter if there was a peace treaty with Iran, and earlier this month, he said he does not think about Americans' financial worries at all when it comes to Iran.
