As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, President Donald Trump is focusing on a more personal milestone: his own 80th birthday. To mark the occasion on June 14, he has organized a high-profile Ultimate Fighting Championship event, UFC Freedom 250, to be held in a temporary arena currently under construction on the South Lawn of the White House.
Construction Underway for UFC Event
Workers are busy building the fighting ring and seating for thousands of spectators, who will gather to watch the sanctioned violence. The event is proceeding despite ongoing reconstruction of the historic East Wing, which was demolished to make way for Trump's new ballroom. The president has argued that the ballroom is necessary for safely hosting his parties, yet he appears unfazed by hosting an exposed outdoor event on the South Lawn.
Security Concerns Raised
Trump has pushed ahead with the UFC fight despite security concerns. The National Guard has been stationed at the base of the Washington Monument as construction continues in the distance. Celebrities such as Adam Sandler and Tom Brady have been invited to attend, adding to the spectacle.
Photographs show the construction site, including a large sign advertising the Freedom 250 events. Onlookers have been seen recording the progress with mobile phones as the UFC cage and ballroom take shape simultaneously.
