Toronto Police to Update on US Consulate Shooting Arrests
Toronto Police Update on US Consulate Shooting Arrests

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw is set to provide an update at 11 a.m. on arrests made in multiple firearm discharge investigations, including the March shooting at the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue. The announcement comes after the death of Const. Marc Pinizzotto, a 43-year-old Emergency Task Force officer killed while executing a warrant.

Key Developments

Police have obtained court authorization to publish the identity of Zara Jabbi, 19, wanted in connection with the consulate shooting. The authorization expires on June 19, 2026. Jabbi was 17 when the photo was taken, requiring special permission under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Nicholas Bennett, 19, shot by police, is expected to be charged with first-degree murder. Another suspect, Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, 18, was arrested and a handgun recovered at a nearby location.

Community Response

A vigil for Const. Pinizzotto was held Sunday at Bathurst and Sheppard, organized by the Jewish community. Councillor James Pasternak and Inspector Izzy Bernardo expressed gratitude for the community's support. The event highlighted growing public intolerance for violence and antisemitism.

Chief Demkiw will be joined by Chief Superintendent Joe Matthews of Detective Operations. The update is expected to address the broader investigation into alleged foreign-linked shootings at Jewish targets.
