Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol has died at the age of 47, the royal palace announced on Friday. The princess, who was the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, had been hospitalized for several months due to a heart condition.
Royal Announcement
The Bureau of the Royal Household issued a statement confirming her death on June 11, 2026. The princess passed away peacefully at a Bangkok hospital surrounded by family members. Her condition had deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks despite intensive medical care.
Life and Legacy
Princess Bajrakitiyabha was born on December 7, 1978, to King Vajiralongkorn and his first wife, Princess Soamsawali. She was educated in Thailand and the United Kingdom, earning a law degree from Sukhothai Thammatirat Open University and a master's degree from the University of London.
She served as Thailand's ambassador to Austria from 2012 to 2014 and later held positions within the royal household. The princess was also known for her charitable work, particularly in education and women's rights.
Public Mourning
Flags across Thailand were lowered to half-staff as the nation entered a period of official mourning. The government declared 15 days of mourning, with all entertainment events cancelled. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed condolences on behalf of the cabinet and urged citizens to wear black or white clothing as a sign of respect.
Thousands of mourners gathered outside the Grand Palace in Bangkok to pay their respects, laying flowers and lighting candles. Many recalled her grace and dedication to public service.
Succession Implications
Her death raises questions about the royal succession. Princess Bajrakitiyabha was considered a potential heir to the throne under Thailand's 2017 constitution, which allows for a female monarch. However, King Vajiralongkorn has designated his son, Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, as the crown prince.
Constitutional experts note that the succession laws remain subject to interpretation, and the king's wishes will likely prevail. The princess's passing removes a stabilizing figure from the royal family, which has seen significant changes in recent years.
The funeral will be held at the Grand Palace with full royal rites, followed by cremation at Sanam Luang. Details of the ceremonies will be announced in due course.
