Toronto police have arrested a suspect in connection with two sexual assaults that took place within a 24-hour period, prompting a citywide alert and a swift investigation.
Details of the Incidents
The first assault occurred on the evening of May 12, 2026, in the area of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue. The second incident happened the following morning near Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue. Both victims were women in their 20s, according to investigators.
Police described the suspect as a man in his 30s, with a thin build and dark hair, who approached the victims from behind. In both cases, the suspect allegedly grabbed the victims before fleeing on foot.
Arrest and Charges
On May 13, officers arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with the assaults. He faces two counts of sexual assault and two counts of forcible confinement. The accused is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
“We are relieved that this individual is in custody,” said Detective Sergeant Sarah Thompson of the Toronto Police Service’s Sex Crimes Unit. “Our officers worked tirelessly to identify and apprehend the suspect, and we thank the public for their assistance.”
Community Response
The assaults sparked concern among residents, particularly in the areas where they occurred. Local businesses increased security measures, and community groups organized safety walks. “It’s scary to think that something like this can happen in broad daylight,” said local resident Maria Lopez. “I’m glad the police acted quickly.”
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow commended the police for their swift response. “Our city will not tolerate violence of any kind,” she said in a statement. “We stand with the victims and their families.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police are investigating whether the suspect may be linked to other similar incidents in the city. They urge anyone with information to contact the Sex Crimes Unit or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
“We encourage anyone who may have been a victim or who witnessed suspicious activity to come forward,” added Detective Thompson. “Your information could be crucial.”
The case highlights the importance of public vigilance and police cooperation in addressing sexual violence. As the legal process unfolds, the community remains focused on supporting the survivors and ensuring safety for all.
