A fire and explosion at a shipyard on New York City's Staten Island has left at least 16 people injured, three of them seriously, according to the New York Fire Department.

Incident Details

The incident began when a report came in at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday about two workers trapped in a confined space at the dock. Responding firefighters discovered a fire burning in the basement of a metal structure at the site, said Joanne Mariano of the fire department's press office.

While crews were still battling the blaze, a major explosion occurred roughly 50 minutes later, Mariano added. By 5 p.m., emergency workers had counted 16 people with injuries, including two firefighters and one civilian who sustained serious injuries.

The fire continued to burn as of the latest reports. It was not immediately clear if anyone had died in the fire and explosion. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
