Russian forces launched a relentless 20-hour bombardment of the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, resulting in at least eight deaths and widespread damage to residential neighborhoods, officials reported Saturday.
Continuous Assault on Residential Areas
The attack, which began Friday evening and continued into Saturday afternoon, targeted civilian infrastructure and homes. Emergency services worked through the night to extinguish fires and rescue survivors from collapsed buildings.
"This was a deliberate strike on peaceful civilians," said a local official. "They bombed for 20 hours without pause."
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
Rescue workers, including volunteers and emergency personnel, sifted through rubble in search of survivors. At least eight bodies were recovered, with dozens more injured. The death toll is expected to rise as search operations continue.
Photographs from the scene showed damaged apartment blocks, shattered windows, and debris-strewn streets. One rescue worker was seen clearing rubble near a destroyed playground.
International Condemnation
The attack drew swift condemnation from international leaders. The United Nations called for an immediate cessation of hostilities against civilian areas. Ukraine's president reiterated calls for more air defense systems from Western allies.
"Every hour of delay in providing air defense means more innocent lives lost," he said in a statement.
Broader Context
Dnipro, a major industrial city in central Ukraine, has been a frequent target of Russian missile and drone strikes. The latest assault underscores the ongoing threat to urban centers as the war enters its third year.
Military analysts note that Russia appears to be intensifying long-range strikes to disrupt Ukrainian infrastructure and morale ahead of a anticipated spring offensive.
