Repeat Extortion Shooting Hits Surrey Home; No Injuries

A residence in Surrey's South Newton neighbourhood was struck by a second extortion-related shooting early Thursday morning, according to police. The Surrey Police Service (SPS) reported that officers responded to calls of gunfire outside a home near 57 Avenue and 148 Street shortly after 4 a.m.

No Injuries, Evidence of Shots Fired

Upon arrival, authorities discovered evidence that shots had been fired. Investigators confirmed that the residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and no injuries were sustained. This marks the second time the same property has been targeted in an extortion-linked shooting; a previous attack occurred on May 20, which also resulted in no injuries.

Extortion Response Team Takes Over

The SPS's Extortion Response Team has assumed control of the investigation. Police believe the shooting is connected to extortion due to prior threats and the earlier incident. Authorities are urging anyone with information, including CCTV or dash-cam footage, or those who may recognize the suspects, to contact police at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Rising Extortion-Related Violence in Surrey

This year, Surrey has witnessed over 100 extortion-related shootings, primarily targeting the South Asian community in British Columbia. In response, the City of Surrey established a $250,000 reward fund last fall for tips leading to arrests and convictions in such cases.

Police continue to investigate and are appealing to the public for assistance in solving these crimes.
