Representative Troy Nehls (R-Texas) is facing intense backlash on social media after making extravagant remarks about President Donald Trump that critics likened to North Korean propaganda.
Nehls' Unusual Praise
During a recent appearance, Nehls declared, “Donald Trump is the best thing to happen in this country in a hundred years. He was born a very special baby. I bet you the doctors said, ‘I can tell this is a very special baby.’” The comments quickly drew comparisons to the deification of leaders in authoritarian regimes.
Nehls also proposed, presumably in jest, a special fund to treat people with so-called “Trump derangement syndrome,” a term used by the president to dismiss critics. “Maybe we ought to provide some counseling for all the nutjobs out there that think Donald Trump is the worst thing,” he added.
History of Trump Devotion
Nehls has a long history of expressing unwavering support for Trump. In 2024, he stated, “If Donald Trump says, ‘Jump three feet high and scratch your head,’ we all jump three feet high and scratch our heads. That’s it.” Earlier this year, he wore a necktie emblazoned with Trump’s face to the State of the Union address and later asked the president to sign it.
The latest comments prompted a torrent of criticism on social media, with users calling the remarks “cringeworthy,” “embarrassing,” and reminiscent of a cult. Some noted that even North Korean propaganda might find the praise excessive. Critics included journalists, political figures, and former Republicans, with many expressing disbelief that such statements come from an elected official.
