Police in the Collines de l'Outaouais are investigating after the body of a 78-year-old Ottawa man was discovered in the Gatineau River Wednesday afternoon near Cantley, about 20 kilometres north of Ottawa.
Discovery and response
Police were called at approximately 5:17 p.m. after reports of an “unconscious person” in the water. Emergency services responded to the scene, but the individual was declared dead at the location.
The deceased has been identified as a 78-year-old man from Ottawa. Authorities have not released his name pending notification of next of kin.
Investigation underway
The MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais police force has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. At this stage, no foul play is suspected, but the probe is ongoing.
“We are treating this as an unexplained death and are gathering all available information,” a police spokesperson said. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
