Reporter Challenges Rutte Over Trump Ties
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte faced a pointed question Wednesday from a Danish reporter about his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, amid accusations that Rutte has been appeasing the American leader during public appearances.
During the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Rasmus Svaneborg of Danish news agency Ritzau directly asked Rutte: “Mark, you sit next to Donald Trump in moments where he talks about conquering Greenland, talks about lashing out at allies like Spain, starting trade wars, things that it doesn’t seem like the old Mark Rutte would approve of. Does this have any effect on your self-respect when you sit next to him like that and say nothing?”
Rutte Defends Trump’s Role in NATO
Rutte responded by arguing that Trump deserves credit “for the fact that NATO is so much stronger” today. He acknowledged that the alliance’s strength is partly due to the Russian threat and the war in Ukraine, but emphasized “it very much also has to do with President Trump.”
The former Dutch prime minister, who led the Netherlands from 2010 to 2024, also addressed Trump’s repeated comments about the U.S. taking over Greenland. Rutte said he told Trump that he agreed China and Russia pose a threat in the Arctic, but stressed that addressing those security concerns is precisely why NATO exists.
Criticism of Rutte’s Silence
Critics have frequently accused Rutte of appeasing Trump, particularly during public appearances when the U.S. president has launched into controversial remarks while Rutte sat beside him without intervening. The exchange at the Ankara summit highlighted ongoing tensions within the alliance over Trump’s unilateralist approach.
