Montreal Police SUV Deliberately Set on Fire Near Headquarters
A Montreal police vehicle was intentionally set ablaze early Tuesday morning in close proximity to the Service de Police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM) headquarters, according to authorities. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on May 17, 2026, in a parking lot adjacent to the police station on Saint-Urbain Street.
Firefighters responded swiftly and extinguished the flames, but the SUV sustained extensive damage. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious. The SPVM has launched an investigation into the arson, which is being considered a targeted attack on law enforcement.
“This is a serious act of violence against our officers,” said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Roussel. “We are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence to identify the perpetrators.”
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the city, though police have not yet linked it to any specific group or motive. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation is ongoing.
