German Chancellor Merz Advises Against Travel to US Amid Trump Criticism
Merz Warns Against US Travel for German Youth

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered sharp criticism of the United States on Friday, stating he would not advise his own children to travel to the U.S. for education or work due to a sudden shift in the social climate there. Speaking at a Catholic gathering in Würzburg, Merz said, "I would not advise my children today to go to the U.S., get educated there or work there, simply because a certain social climate has suddenly developed there," as reported by The Guardian.

Background of the Dispute

Merz's comments come a month after President Donald Trump attacked him for claiming that Iran's leadership was humiliating the U.S. during nuclear negotiations. Trump responded on Truth Social, calling Merz ignorant and linking his remarks to Germany's economic struggles. "No wonder Germany is doing so poorly, both Economically, and otherwise!" Trump wrote in April.

Merz's View on America

Despite his admiration for the U.S., Merz admitted his admiration is not growing. He noted that even highly educated Americans face difficulty finding jobs, referencing a drop in the U.S. labor force participation rate to 61.8%, the lowest since October 2021. Merz emphasized that Germany offers great opportunities for young people, saying, "I firmly believe that there are few countries in the world that offer such great opportunities, especially for young people, as Germany."

Trump's Stance on Iran

When asked if Americans' financial situations motivate him to end the Iran war, Trump stated, "Not even a little bit." He reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons is his sole focus.

Recent Diplomatic Contact

On the same day as his critical remarks, Merz reported having a "great phone call" with Trump, during which they agreed on the need to open the Strait of Hormuz and prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Reactions

Richard Grenell, Trump's former acting director of national intelligence, slammed Merz's comments, accusing him of suffering from "Trump Derangement Syndrome" and calling him a leader controlled by the German woke media. Grenell claimed Merz was complimentary during a White House visit but now shows no strategy.
