A Surprising Resignation Announcement
In a dramatic turn of events, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Republican congresswoman from Georgia, has declared she will step down from her congressional position in January. This announcement came shortly after a very public disagreement with former President Donald Trump concerning the effort to release documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Political Rival Offers Blunt Assessment
Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas did not hold back in her reaction to the news. Appearing on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, Crockett expressed her disbelief. "Honestly, I was like, 'You got to be kidding me,'" Crockett stated. She suggested that Greene could not handle the political pressure after finding herself on the opposing side of Trump for just one week. "You're on the other side of the president for one week and you can't take the heat?" Crockett questioned, adding that Greene has been an "instigator" for much of the hate emanating from the Make America Great Again movement.
In her own statement, Greene explained her decision, saying, "My only goal and desire has ever been to hold the Republican Party accountable for the promises it makes to the American people and put America First." She cited "years of nonstop, never-ending personal attacks, death threats, lawfare, ridiculous slander and lies" as factors that most people could not withstand.
A Complicated Feud and an Unexpected Offer of Support
The relationship between Crockett and Greene has been notoriously contentious. Their public disputes include a 2024 House hearing where Greene made a derogatory comment about Crockett's appearance, and more recently in August, Greene claimed Crockett did not understand "the Black American struggle."
However, the dynamic shifted last week after Trump publicly withdrew his endorsement of Greene. In an unexpected move, Crockett offered a message of support to Greene on social media, writing, "I'm here for you girl… I told you not to trust him… all he cares about is HIMself (and protecting pedos) he never loved you."
Despite her impending departure from Congress, reports from TIME suggest that Greene has considered a run for president in 2028. Both lawmakers serve on the House Oversight Committee, which earlier this month released over 20,000 documents related to the Epstein case. Crockett has indicated she is unsure if Trump is mentioned in the remaining files that are still to be made public.
