Halifax police have charged a man in connection with a hate-motivated assault at a Costco store. The suspect allegedly shouted racially offensive language and physically assaulted a customer inside the store.

According to Halifax Regional Police, the incident occurred on July 9, 2026, at the Costco location on Lacewood Drive. Officers responded to a report of an assault in progress. Upon arrival, they learned that a man had been yelling racial slurs and then struck another shopper. The victim sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
Charges and Investigation
Police identified and arrested the suspect, a 34-year-old Halifax man, on July 10. He faces charges of assault and uttering threats. Investigators are treating the incident as a hate-motivated crime. “We are committed to thoroughly investigating all hate-motivated incidents,” said Constable John MacLeod in a statement. “This type of behavior has no place in our community.”
The suspect was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the altercation or has video footage to come forward.
