White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday attempted to attribute political violence in the nation, including the shooting at Saturday's White House Correspondents' Association dinner, to what she termed a 'left-wing cult of hatred' against President Donald Trump. However, one of her assertions drew sharp criticism from observers.
Leavitt's Statement and Backlash
'Those who constantly falsely label and slander the president as a fascist, as a threat to democracy, and compare him to Hitler to score political points are fueling this kind of violence,' Leavitt declared. Many were quick to note that one of the most prominent examples of comparing Trump to Hitler is already within the White House: Vice President JD Vance.
Vance's Past Remarks
In 2016, during Trump's first presidential campaign, Vance told a friend via private message that he was uncertain whether Trump was 'a cynical asshole like Nixon' or if he could be 'America's Hitler.' Since then, Vance has stated he was mistaken about Trump. Nevertheless, social media users and political commentators reminded Leavitt of Vance's past comments, with many sharing the original message and expressing irony.
Critics also highlighted that Trump himself has used inflammatory language, labeling Democrats as 'radicals,' 'enemies of America,' and 'demonic,' which they argue contributes to the very violence Leavitt condemns. Several tweets pointed out the inconsistency in blaming the left while ignoring rhetoric from within the administration.
The incident underscores ongoing tensions over political discourse and accountability, as the White House faces scrutiny for its own officials' past statements.
