Sen. Mark Kelly Condemns Trump's Violent Rhetoric, Faces Pentagon Probe
Kelly: Trump 'Singularly Unqualified' After Hanging Remarks

U.S. Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, delivered a stark condemnation of former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, stating he should understand the dangers of inciting violence against elected officials. Kelly labelled Trump as "singularly unqualified" for the presidency in the wake of inflammatory comments.

A Direct Threat and a Military Investigation

The confrontation stems from a social media post by Trump that appeared to endorse the idea of executing political opponents. Kelly, a former Navy pilot, was among the Democrats seemingly targeted by the post which discussed hanging. In response, Kelly and several other congress members with military or intelligence backgrounds released a video reminding service members of their duty to refuse illegal orders.

This act has now prompted the Pentagon to investigate Kelly for a potential court-martial, a move some legal experts have questioned. Kelly linked the severe rhetoric directly to a surge in violent threats against him and his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.

An Appeal to Shared Experience Falls on Deaf Ears

During an interview on CNN's "OutFront" with Erin Burnett, Kelly revealed the personal toll. "We get more threats now in a single day than we would get in months," he stated, describing them as graphic and violent, often targeting Giffords. He made a pointed appeal to Trump's own experience, referencing the former president's near-assassination attempt.

"He should know," Kelly said. "And he called out political violent rhetoric and said it should stop. And he didn't even make it to Thanksgiving before he's calling for us to be hanged. Have we ever heard a president of the United States calling for the execution of members of Congress?"

Kelly suggested that despite Trump's later attempts to walk back his "punishable by death" remarks, the damaging effect had already echoed across the country.

Refusing to Be Silenced Amidst Normalized Chaos

The senator expressed deep concern over the normalization of such extreme language. "We can't normalize this," Kelly insisted. "That's one of the problems here, is that Donald Trump is so singularly unqualified for this job... The things he says are so ridiculous, people are starting to get comfortable with it. And he does it for a reason. He wants to shut people up, but he's not going to shut me up."

Concluding his remarks, Kelly advised Trump and his allies to redirect their focus toward the pressing issues affecting everyday Americans. "You know ... the cost of health care and groceries, the things that are affecting everyday Americans that they need some help with," he said, framing the current political climate as a dangerous distraction from substantive governance.
