Iran Seizes Tanker Carrying Its Own Oil Amid US Blockade

Iran announced on Wednesday that it had seized a tanker in the Gulf of Oman, which appeared to be a sanctioned vessel carrying the Islamic Republic's own oil. The tanker, identified as Ocean Koi, was detained by Iranian naval commandos, according to state television.

Details of the Seizure

State television reported that the tanker was attempting to disrupt oil exports and the interests of the Iranian nation. The vessel is managed by Ocean Kudos Shipping Co., a Chinese company based in Shanghai, according to the Equasis international shipping database.

The Islamic Republic News Agency stated that the tanker was carrying Iranian oil but had sought to exploit regional conditions, without providing further details. State media released a video showing armed men boarding the tanker under darkness and raising the Iranian flag.

Context of the Conflict

The seizure occurs amid a 10-week war between Iran and the US, which began in late February. Iran has enforced a near closure of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil and gas flows. However, vessels carrying Iranian oil had been passing through until the US imposed a naval blockade in mid-April to prevent Tehran's oil from reaching global markets.

Benchmark oil prices in London showed little reaction to the seizure, trading largely unchanged. Prices had earlier risen after the US and Iran exchanged fire near the Strait of Hormuz, though Washington insists a monthlong ceasefire remains in effect.

US Sanctions and Blockade

The US sanctioned a tanker of the same name in February for being part of Iran's shadow fleet, claiming it had carried millions of barrels of Iranian fuel. The US Navy has been enforcing the blockade, with recent incidents including the USS Rafael Peralta intercepting the Iran-flagged tanker Stream.

Despite the blockade, tankers have continued to load at Iranian terminals, but Washington says it has forced multiple vessels to turn back. The situation remains tense as both sides continue negotiations for a permanent end to the conflict.
