Former White House Press Secretary Casts Doubt on Trump's Awareness of First Lady's Epstein Remarks
In a striking commentary, former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham has publicly challenged the assertion that President Donald Trump was unaware first lady Melania Trump would address her connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a recent press appearance. The first lady held a surprising media event on Thursday to directly confront persistent rumors regarding her associations with Epstein and his imprisoned accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.
Distancing and a Call for Congressional Action
During her statement, Melania Trump firmly distanced herself from both Epstein and Maxwell, while simultaneously advocating for a congressional hearing dedicated to survivors of sexual abuse. This move comes in the wake of a revealing 2002 email correspondence between Trump, then known as Melania Knauss, and Maxwell, which was made public earlier this year and indicated a previously friendly relationship between the two women.
Grisham's Skeptical Analysis on CNN
Speaking to CNN's Phil Mattingly, Grisham expressed profound skepticism about reports suggesting the president had no prior knowledge of his wife's intended remarks. "I'm going to say I called BS on our president saying he knew nothing about it," Grisham stated emphatically. "Because at the very least, I imagine she would have given him a heads-up if she had sent an advisory out yesterday."
When Mattingly probed whether the president could have intervened if he had been forewarned and objected, Grisham's response was unequivocal: "Absolutely not," a reply that elicited a broad smile and chuckle from the interviewer.
Portrait of a Strategic and Independent First Lady
Drawing from her tenure as Melania Trump's communications director and chief of staff, Grisham painted a detailed portrait of the first lady's character. "She's a very strong, very independent woman," Grisham explained, "and when she feels that she needs to do something and she feels very strongly that it's the right thing to do, she will do it no matter what anybody says, be it her husband, be it her advisers, it doesn't matter."
Grisham admitted she had no definitive insight into the specific timing of Melania's decision to speak out. However, she offered two plausible theories:
- The first lady's press team had likely been fielding numerous media inquiries, prompting her to proactively address the issue before a larger story could develop.
- Melania Trump may have simply grown weary of the continuous speculation and "got sick of all the nonsense."
A Calculated Move to Make Waves
Emphasizing the first lady's deliberate nature, Grisham asserted that Melania Trump "thinks about everything she does" and "does things very strategically." According to the former press secretary, the first lady was fully aware that the timing and content of her press appearance would generate significant controversy and "make absolute waves." Grisham concluded by noting that the first lady often becomes "really tired of being interjected into some of her husband's shadier areas of life" and, consequently, chooses to make her position clear through public statements.
