Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has accused Russia of stirring up opposition to Germany's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. The allegation, made during a press conference in Berlin, marks a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two nations. Wadephul stated that Russia has been actively lobbying against Germany's candidacy, using diplomatic channels to undermine Berlin's efforts. He provided no specific evidence but emphasized that Germany remains committed to its UN bid and will continue to seek support from member states. The accusation comes amid broader strains in EU-Russia relations, particularly over the conflict in Ukraine and energy disputes. Russia has not yet officially responded to the claims. Germany's bid for a 2027-2028 Security Council seat requires a two-thirds majority vote in the UN General Assembly, and Berlin has been campaigning heavily in recent months. Analysts suggest that while Russia's opposition may complicate Germany's efforts, the bid is still likely to succeed given broad Western support.
