Fatal Surrey Shooting: Homicide Team Investigates Gang-Related Killing
Fatal Surrey Shooting: Homicide Team Investigates

Homicide investigators were called to the scene Tuesday of a fatal shooting in Surrey's Newton neighbourhood. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the case, working alongside the Surrey Police Service.

Details of the Incident

Surrey Police Service Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton reported that front-line officers responded to reports of shots fired into a vehicle in the 6800-block of 148 Street just before 7 p.m. The deceased victim was found hanging out of a silver-coloured vehicle, with cash scattered on the ground in front of him, according to a photo sent to Postmedia.

Shocking CCTV footage shows a compact black sedan pulling up behind the silver car, blocking it as it attempts to back out of a driveway. The silver car pulls forward as two hooded shooters, dressed entirely in black, jump out of the black car and run up the driveway. One victim can then be seen crawling through bushes before the shooters run back to the black car and speed away.

Victims and Suspected Motive

Houghton confirmed that emergency responders tended to the fatally wounded man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second adult male victim was found at the scene and transported to hospital with reportedly minor injuries. Neither victim was associated with the house on 148th Street where the shooting occurred, one source said.

The source indicated that the shooting is believed to be gang-related, with the victims having connections to the Brothers Keepers gang, which remains locked in a bloody conflict with rivals from the United Nations gang.

Investigation Ongoing

Houghton stated that no arrests have been made and no suspect information is available to share at this early stage. A burning vehicle was found near the murder scene, though no connection to the shooting has yet been established. IHIT has now taken over the investigation and is working in partnership with SPS to complete priority investigative tasks.
