A Calgary family is mourning the loss of a 12-year-old boy who drowned in Mahogany Lake on Wednesday. The child, identified as Ethan Thompson, was pulled from the water by emergency responders but could not be revived. His father, Mark Thompson, shared that Ethan had recently told him, "Daddy, thank you for the good life you are going to give us." The family is devastated by the sudden tragedy.
Details of the Incident
Ethan was playing near the lake with friends when he went underwater and did not resurface. Bystanders called 911, and firefighters and paramedics arrived within minutes. Despite resuscitation efforts, Ethan was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner has ruled the death an accidental drowning.
Community Response
Neighbors and local residents have expressed shock and grief. A makeshift memorial of flowers and stuffed animals has been placed near the lake. The community is rallying to support the Thompson family through a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $20,000.
"We are heartbroken," said family friend Sarah Jenkins. "Ethan was a bright, energetic boy who loved soccer and video games. This is a terrible loss."
Safety Concerns
The incident has raised questions about water safety in Mahogany Lake, which is a popular spot for families. City officials are reviewing safety measures, including signage and the availability of life rings. "Our thoughts are with the family," said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. "We will work to prevent such tragedies in the future."
The Calgary Police Service is not treating the death as suspicious. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances.
