Edmonton Councillor Proposes 'Forever Canadian Avenue' Street Name
Edmonton Councillor Thomas Lukaszuk has applied to name a street 'Forever Canadian Avenue' in a bid to foster national pride and unity. The proposal, announced on May 17, 2026, would see a yet-to-be-determined roadway in the city bear the patriotic moniker. Lukaszuk, a former provincial politician, held up a prototype street sign during a press conference, emphasizing the symbolic importance of the name.
“This is about celebrating what it means to be Canadian,” Lukaszuk said. “In a time when we face many challenges, we need reminders of our shared values and identity.” The application will go through city council’s standard approval process, including public consultation and traffic planning considerations.
The move has garnered mixed reactions from residents, with some praising the gesture of unity and others questioning the practicality of renaming existing streets. The proposed avenue would be located in a new development area, minimizing disruption to current addresses.
Lukaszuk’s initiative aligns with similar efforts across Canada to instill civic pride through public works. If approved, 'Forever Canadian Avenue' would join other patriotic street names in Edmonton, such as 'Canada Way' and 'Confederation Boulevard.' The councillor hopes the name will inspire community spirit for generations to come.
