Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) on Monday strongly criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci, accusing him of causing "a great deal of pain for every American" following the release of declassified documents by outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The documents allegedly expose Fauci's lies to Congress regarding the origins of COVID-19 and funding for gain-of-function research.
"This is more evidence of what we already knew. Dr. Fauci lied; he caused a great deal of pain for every American and most people around the world," Comer said during an appearance on Fox News' "Mornings with Maria." He added that decisions made by U.S. leadership during the pandemic were based solely on Fauci's statements, which he now claims were false.
Comer Details Allegations of Deception
Comer elaborated on the allegations, stating, "He lied about funding gain-of-function research, he lied about the origins of COVID, he just continued to lie throughout the entire COVID debacle." The congressman asserted that there is "more than enough evidence" from Gabbard's released files for the Department of Justice to begin holding Fauci accountable.
Comer also questioned the impact of Fauci's alleged deception on vaccine development. "Decisions were made about the vaccine. If we had known at the time that this didn't come from a wet market — this was man-made — would that have had an impact on the type of vaccine that Americans were given that we now know probably has caused a lot of health problems as a result of the COVID vaccine," he said.
Call for Accountability and Prevention
During the interview, Comer described the COVID scandal as the "biggest cover-up in American history" and warned, "If something is not done, this will happen again." His remarks come in the wake of Gabbard's release of documents that allegedly show Fauci provided millions in U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab, misused his role to suppress the truth about COVID-19's origins, and lied to Congress while under oath in 2024.
Fauci has not yet publicly responded to the released files but has previously denied allegations of covering up COVID-19's origins and suppressing the lab leak theory. The controversy continues to fuel political debate over pandemic response and government transparency.
