Groups are urging the Canadian government to increase support for Iranian activists and members of the diaspora who face threats from the regime. The call comes during a news conference in Ottawa, where Conservative MP James Bezan and Ardeshir Zarezadeh, president of the International Centre for Human Rights, highlighted the urgent need for action.
Growing Concerns for Iranian Activists
The organizations emphasize that many Iranian activists and diaspora members in Canada are at risk due to their opposition to the Iranian regime. They are calling for enhanced protective measures, including faster processing of asylum claims and increased funding for community support programs.
Support from Canadian Officials
Conservative MP James Bezan expressed solidarity with the cause, stating that Canada must take a stronger stance against human rights abuses in Iran. He urged the government to implement policies that safeguard those who speak out against the regime.
Ardeshir Zarezadeh noted that the Iranian regime actively targets dissidents abroad, making it essential for host countries like Canada to provide robust protection. He called for diplomatic efforts to pressure Iran to cease its harassment of activists.
The groups also highlighted the need for Canada to expand its refugee sponsorship programs and streamline visa processes for at-risk individuals. They argue that current measures are insufficient to address the scale of the threat.
This appeal follows recent incidents of intimidation and violence against Iranian activists in Canada. The groups stress that without immediate action, more lives could be endangered.
