Canada is doubling down on its efforts to reunite Ukrainian children who have been allegedly stolen by Russia, Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced on Thursday. Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Anand emphasized that the Canadian government is committed to using all diplomatic and legal avenues to bring the children back to their families.
Renewed Commitment
Anand stated that Canada is working closely with international partners, including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to address the issue. She noted that the children have been forcibly taken from Ukraine and relocated to Russian territory, a practice that violates international law.
Diplomatic and Legal Actions
The minister outlined several measures Canada is taking, including increased sanctions against individuals involved in the abductions and support for legal cases at the International Court of Justice. Canada is also providing funding to organizations that are working on the ground to locate and reunite the children.
Anand highlighted that Canada has already allocated additional resources to its embassy in Moscow to facilitate consular services for affected families. She urged other nations to join Canada in condemning these actions and taking concrete steps to address the crisis.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with the conflict now in its third year. The Canadian government has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine, providing military aid and humanitarian assistance since the invasion began.
Anand concluded by reaffirming Canada's unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and expressed hope that the international community will continue to stand with Ukraine in its time of need.
