Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand has declared that Israel's treatment of Canadian citizens during the recent flotilla incident constitutes a violation of a United Nations treaty. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Anand emphasized that the mistreatment, which included detention and alleged torture, breached international agreements regarding the humane treatment of detainees.

The flotilla, organized by activist groups, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in international waters. Among those detained were several Canadian nationals, including Shahid Mahmood, who reported experiencing torture and mistreatment during his detention. Mahmood described being subjected to harsh interrogation methods and denied basic necessities.
Government Response
Anand stated that Canada has formally raised the issue with Israeli authorities and is seeking a full investigation. She noted that the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, to which Israel is a signatory, prohibits such actions. The minister called for accountability and assurances that similar incidents will not recur.
The opposition has criticized the government for not taking stronger action, such as imposing sanctions. However, Anand emphasized the importance of diplomatic channels in resolving the matter. The Canadian government continues to provide consular assistance to those affected.
