An Air Canada flight veered off the runway at Montreal's airport on Thursday evening, July 9, 2026, according to airport officials. Flight AC774, arriving from Los Angeles (LAX), experienced the incident upon landing at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport.
Incident Details
The aircraft, an Airbus A330, veered off the paved surface after touchdown, coming to rest on grass adjacent to the runway. Emergency crews responded immediately, but no injuries were reported among the 250 passengers and 12 crew members on board. Passengers were safely deplaned and transported to the terminal via buses.
“The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority,” an Air Canada spokesperson said in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with airport authorities and Transport Canada to determine the cause of this incident.”
Investigations Underway
Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) have launched an investigation into the cause of the veer-off. Preliminary reports indicate that weather conditions at the time were clear, with no significant wind or precipitation. The aircraft has been towed to a maintenance hangar for inspection.
Montreal airport operations were temporarily disrupted, with some flights delayed or diverted. Normal operations resumed by late evening. The runway involved remains closed pending investigation.
Recent Aviation Incidents
This incident comes amid a series of aviation safety events in Canada. Earlier this year, a small plane made an emergency landing on a highway in Ontario, and a helicopter crash in British Columbia resulted in minor injuries. The TSB has noted an increase in runway incursions and veer-offs globally, prompting renewed focus on runway safety protocols.
“Runway veer-offs are rare but serious,” said a TSB spokesperson. “Our investigation will examine all factors, including pilot actions, aircraft systems, and runway conditions.”
Air Canada has not yet released a timeline for when the aircraft will return to service. Passengers on the affected flight were offered hotel accommodations and rebooking options.
