Democrat Xavier Becerra advanced to the general election for California governor on Friday, positioning himself as an experienced leader for the nation's most populous state. He aims to succeed Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited.
Becerra's Experience and Campaign
Becerra emphasized his more than 35 years in public office, including roles as state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, to argue he was the most qualified candidate in a crowded field. 'I am ready to lead the fight to uphold California's promise to make sure we have the governance worthy of our gifts,' he said on election night.
It remains unclear who Becerra will face in the general election. His top rivals include Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator endorsed by President Donald Trump, and Democrat Tom Steyer, a billionaire climate activist who spent $215 million of his own money on his campaign.
Turning Point in Campaign
Becerra's campaign initially struggled to gain traction. However, after one of the top Democratic contenders, Rep. Eric Swalwell, dropped out due to sexual assault allegations, Becerra consolidated Democratic support.
Policy Stances
Becerra has pledged to maintain California's role as a chief opponent of President Trump. As attorney general, he filed over 120 legal actions against the first Trump administration on issues ranging from immigration to climate policy.
During the campaign, rivals scrutinized his leadership as health secretary during the COVID-19 pandemic and the unaccompanied migrant children crisis in 2021. His department was responsible for shelters housing these children, some of which faced criticism for inadequate living conditions and insufficient vetting of sponsors.
Plans if Elected
If elected, Becerra said he would declare states of emergency to address high energy costs, housing shortages, and freeze home insurance rates.
Historical Significance
Although California is one of the most diverse states, most of its governors have been white men. Becerra would become the first Latino governor since the late 1800s. Newsom was barred by term limits from seeking a third term.
