President Donald Trump has thrown his full support behind Representative Tom Kean Jr. in the New Jersey Republican primary, despite the congressman's prolonged absence from Capitol Hill. Kean has not voted in the House since March 5 and has missed over 100 floor votes, sparking questions about his health and commitment.
Trump's Endorsement
On Truth Social, Trump praised Kean as a "Great Representative" and a "Tremendous Advocate of our America First Agenda." He wrote that Kean is "working tirelessly" to secure the border, stop migrant crime, grow the economy, cut taxes, champion small business, unleash energy dominance, support the military and veterans, and protect the Second Amendment. Trump urged voters to support Kean on Election Day, June 2, asserting that "HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!"
Kean's Absence
Kean told the New Jersey Globe on May 21 that he has an unspecified illness but is "on the road to a full recovery." He acknowledged the need for transparency and thanked his constituents for their support. Despite his absence, Kean faces no opposition in the primary and is seeking reelection in a competitive district. The New York Times reported that Kean's race is "one of the most competitive House races in the country," as Republicans aim to maintain control of Congress in the November midterms.
Major media outlets have noted Kean's disappearance from the House floor. The Times attempted to locate him but was unsuccessful. Kean's prolonged absence has raised concerns, but Trump's endorsement underscores the former president's continued influence in Republican primaries.
