Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, won the party's nomination on Tuesday, defeating longtime incumbent Senator John Cornyn. National Republicans, who had already spent $90 million attempting to defeat Paxton in the primary, now fear they will have to spend at least that much to help him win the general election.
Paxton's Victory Creates Challenges for GOP
Paxton, known for his far-right viewpoints, serious corruption allegations, and a controversial personal life, has opened up a significant vulnerability in the GOP's Senate majority. His victory transforms Democratic State Representative James Talarico's campaign from a long shot into a serious contender. Talarico, a progressive with a large social media following, has already raised $40 million compared to Paxton's $7 million. Republicans are strategizing attacks on Talarico's socially liberal positions, while Democrats prepare to support their candidate financially.
Shifting Political Landscape
Texas is not the only state where Democrats see opportunities. In Nebraska, a Democrat agreed to drop out to clear the way for independent candidate Dan Osborn, who would not caucus with either party but would take a seat from the GOP. Iowa's upcoming primaries are expected to produce a strong Democratic candidate. These developments in red states, where Donald Trump won comfortably in 2024, are now competitive due to Trump's low approval ratings. Democrats, who initially saw a path to the Senate majority through states like Maine, Michigan, Alaska, and Ohio, now have backup options.
Republican Concerns and Strategy
Republicans are openly worried. The National Republican Senatorial Committee released a statement attacking Talarico without mentioning Paxton. The Club for Growth plans to run ads focusing on Talarico's religious and LGBTQ+ views. Talarico, however, is leveraging Paxton's corruption, noting that Republican legislators led the effort to impeach Paxton in 2023. He stated, 'The most corrupt politician in America just became the Republican nominee for the United States Senate.'
Financial Implications
Senator Cornyn predicted a Paxton victory could cost the party several hundred million dollars. Other GOP strategists agree the race will be one of the most expensive Senate contests ever. The Senate Leadership Fund, which spent millions attacking Paxton in the primary, now faces the awkward task of supporting him. Many hope that MAGA Inc., a super PAC aligned with Trump, will provide funding. As one strategist noted, 'If Donald Trump wants Ken Paxton to win the general election, he has to make it happen with money and television ads.'
