Vancouver police confirmed Wednesday that a 72-year-old man died in hospital on Sunday, July 5, after being struck by a cyclist in downtown Vancouver on June 29. The man and his wife, visiting from the United States, were crossing West Cordova Street at Richards Street around 5:30 p.m. when a cyclist travelling eastbound on Cordova Street hit them.
Incident Details
According to police, the couple had the right of way at the intersection. The 72-year-old man lost consciousness at the scene and was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital for emergency surgery. His wife suffered minor injuries and has since recovered. The cyclist was not injured and remained at the scene, cooperating with investigators.
Police Statement
Sgt. Adam Donaldson said in an earlier news release that the couple reportedly had the right of way when a cyclist heading east on Cordova Street struck them. "Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased," Donaldson added. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been announced yet.
