Trump threatens Iran with bombing as Vance meets delegation in Switzerland

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Iranian officials with the resumption of bombing their country as Vice-President JD Vance was scheduled to meet with an Iranian delegation in Switzerland to work out a peace plan on June 21, 2026.

Trump told Fox News that he warned Iranian officials that the U.S. would resume bombing Iran if issues around the Strait of Hormuz are not resolved. "You close it and you won't have a country," Trump said he told Iranian officials. "You won't even make it back to your f—ing country."

Trump may 'take over' Strait of Hormuz if deal fails

The president also said the U.S. may "take over" the Strait of Hormuz if a deal cannot be reached in Switzerland. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham told CBS News that Trump plans to take control of the strait and impose tolls if peace talks with Iran fall through. "If this deal fails, President Trump is going to take the Strait of Hormuz over by force," Graham said, per Al Jazeera. "The United States will control the Strait of Hormuz; we'll charge a fee for all those who go through to pay for the operation."

Iranian negotiator denounces US 'desperation'

After Trump's threats, an Iranian source close to the delegation in Switzerland told CNN that negotiations between the U.S. and Iran had stalled but were not over. Back-channel dialogues were ongoing to bring parties back to the table. Earlier, Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf denounced the "desperation" of the U.S. after Trump threatened the Iranian delegation negotiating the peace deal with Vance.

Iran threatens to close Strait of Hormuz

Iranian state media reported on June 20 that the country's military command said it will close the strait due to Israel's alleged violations of the ceasefire with Lebanon and the U.S. "failing to implement" the first clause of the tentative deal to end the war, according to CNN. Trump told Fox News the U.S. could become the "guardian angel" of the strait by collecting 20% of the oil that passes through it.
