Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation after an Ottawa police officer shot and wounded a 42-year-old man during a hostage standoff in Kanata on Thursday night. The suspect was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the SIU said in a release Friday.
Police Negotiated for 14 Hours Before Tactical Entry
Ottawa police received a 911 call at approximately 7 a.m. on Thursday reporting a woman being held hostage at knifepoint inside a home on Finlayson Crescent in the Morgan's Grant district. Officers negotiated with the suspect for about 14 hours before a tactical unit entered the residence around 9 p.m. to free the woman.
The woman was not injured during the operation, according to the SIU. The suspect, who has not been identified, is in stable condition in hospital.
SIU Assigns Six Investigators to the Case
The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. The agency is appealing for anyone with information, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or via the SIU website.
“The man was arrested in connection with holding a woman hostage and taken to hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury,” the SIU said in its release.
Independent Oversight of Police Actions
The SIU is an independent provincial agency that investigates police actions that may have resulted in death, serious injury, or the discharge of a firearm at a person. Ottawa police have stated that the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. No identities have been released.
