Former prison warden Rebecca Green, 29, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for engaging in a sexual relationship with convicted murderer John Otugade while he was incarcerated at the maximum-security HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire, England. The Cambridge Constabulary announced the sentencing on Tuesday, detailing how the relationship began in October 2022 and continued until authorities uncovered the misconduct.
Investigation reveals relationship
Green, from Holbeach, Lincolnshire, initially denied any inappropriate involvement with Otugade, who was serving a 25-year sentence for murder. However, suspicions led investigators to search her vehicle, where they seized her phone. Forensic analysis revealed messages confirming the relationship. Additionally, detectives found that Otugade had smuggled a phone into the prison, and Green's contact was listed as “partner” under his approved contacts list.
The affair began while Otugade was housed at HMP Whitemoor. In spring 2023, he was transferred to another facility, but Green continued to deny the relationship even as evidence mounted. The Cambridge Constabulary stated that the breach of trust was serious, as Green was responsible for maintaining safety and security within the prison.
Sentencing and impact
Green pleaded guilty to wilful misconduct in public office and was sentenced on June 24. Detective Constable Tom Adams, one of the lead investigators, emphasized the gravity of the offense. “As a prison officer, you have a responsibility to keep prisoners and your colleagues safe,” Adams said. “This was a serious breach of Green’s responsibilities, and she failed to consider the potential impact on the security and safety of the staff and prisoners and how her actions undermined the work of the prison.”
He added: “This sentence shows how seriously the police and courts take such breaches.” The case highlights the ongoing challenges prisons face in preventing staff misconduct and contraband, such as smuggled phones, that can facilitate inappropriate relationships and compromise security.
