Ottawa police have charged a man in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on Feb. 25 at a drop-in centre on Rideau Street. The incident involved an SUV that struck four pedestrians before slamming into the building housing the centre at the intersection of Rideau Street and Cobourg Street.
Details of the Incident
According to police, the SUV mounted the sidewalk and hit the pedestrians shortly before 3 p.m. on the afternoon of the crash. One pedestrian, a 54-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others sustained injuries, two of whom were taken to hospital in serious condition. The driver, a 38-year-old Ottawa man, was arrested at the scene and initially treated for minor injuries.
Following an investigation, the Ottawa Police Service Collision Investigations Unit laid charges on June 22. The accused faces one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. Police have not disclosed whether impairment is a factor, but sources indicate that alcohol may have played a role.
Court Proceedings
The suspect appeared in court on June 23 and was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing. The identity of the accused has not been released due to a publication ban requested by the defence. Crown prosecutors are seeking strict bail conditions, including a ban on driving and a requirement to abstain from alcohol.
“This was a tragic event that has deeply affected the community,” said Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families as they navigate this difficult time.”

The drop-in centre, operated by the Shepherds of Good Hope, provides services to vulnerable individuals in the area. The crash has raised concerns about pedestrian safety on Rideau Street, which sees heavy foot traffic. In response, the city has announced a review of safety measures at the intersection, including potential installation of bollards and improved signage.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes immediately after the crash. “I heard a loud bang and then saw people running,” said a nearby shopkeeper. “It was terrifying.” The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for any additional witnesses or dashcam footage.
