Durham police have identified the constable recruit killed in a crash near the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, Ont., on July 7, 2026. Tyrone Magbitang, 27, died when his vehicle collided with another car on Highway 73. His family is mourning and demanding answers.
Family Grieves and Seeks Justice
Magbitang's mother, Liza, said he was passionate about becoming a police officer. 'He said he just didn’t have anywhere to go,' she recalled, describing his dedication to the force. The family has called for a thorough investigation into the crash's circumstances.
Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) expressed condolences, stating Magbitang was a valued member of the force. 'Our hearts go out to his family and friends,' said a DRPS spokesperson.
Crash Details and Response
The collision occurred on July 7, 2026, near the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, approximately 30 kilometres south of London. Emergency services responded, but Magbitang was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating the crash, and no charges have been laid yet. 'We are working to determine the cause,' said OPP Constable Mark Smith.
Calls for Safety Improvements
The incident has sparked calls for enhanced safety measures on Highway 73, known for its high traffic volume and limited lighting. Local residents and officials have urged the Ministry of Transportation to install traffic lights or reduce speed limits.
Magbitang's family plans to advocate for road safety changes in his memory. 'We don't want another family to go through this,' his mother said.
Remembering Tyrone Magbitang
Magbitang graduated from the police college in June 2026 and had just begun field training with Durham police. Colleagues described him as 'dedicated and compassionate.' A memorial service is scheduled for July 15.
